Mediterranean Climate

“Where The Olive Tree Surrenders, The Mediterranean Ends”

Georges Duhamel

As mentioned by the French Author Georges Duhamel, the olive tree is the plant of the Mediterranean.

It was confirmed with archeological discoveries that the olive cultivation had developed near the civilizations in Mediterranean Basin and the history of olive tree dates back back 12,000 years. The acquisition of the olive tree to the culture and the cultivation of olives for nutrition begun in Anatolia approximately 6,000 years ago. The olive tree adapted itself well to the long, hot summer season of the subtropical climate in the east region of the Mediterranean Basin. The high vitality of the olive stems from; its special leaf anatomy, the harmony of its root systems with the environment and its adaptation capabilities. The high level of cohesion that olive tree shows against extreme environmental conditions such as drought, salinity, high temperature degrees, resistance level of some olive varieties to low temperatures, all results from its perfect genetic power.  The Mediterranean basin has an ideal climate for olive cultivation and the olive tree can also show adaptation to lower Mediterranean climates providing that the change of temperature is not extreme. Minimum temperatures are important in fall and winter seasons for the formation of the normal flower of the olive tree.

The olive tree was first accepted in to culture in Anatolia and it spread in to the Mediterranean basin form there. Olive cultivation started in various countries (USA, Australia, South Africa…) around the World, in regions with similar latitudes and longitudes of the Mediterranean (climatic) belt.
